Once you’ve recruited allies and faced off against larger groups, the real tactic begins to kick in. At first it seems sparse, with large maps that are initially only populated by yourself and a bunch of thugs. If you decide to get involved in any conflicts that arise along your way, you will be greeted with deep and satisfying combat mechanics. Whether you take a walk or get involved is up to you, but the event will start and end without your input. As you travel the world in search of a new quest to accomplish, these cheeky Cossacks have taken another Polish fort nearby. What helps WFAS feel alive is the way events happen in the game in real time. You can also become a brigand and loot towns, if that’s how you like to ride. Although only three of the nations have proper histories as such, you are free to join, oppose, or help any of the lands as you see fit. Set in a torn war 17 e century in Eastern Europe, With Fire and Sword tells the story of the five nations fighting for supremacy. Are you joining the Polish or Crimean army? Loot local towns like a rough and ready bandit? Do you just want to obediently trade your goods until you can afford that really fast horse? The choice is yours, and this is favored by the huge world of the game and the large amount of different mounts, weapon types, and trade items.Īll of these choices wouldn’t make any difference if you didn’t care about the game world at all, but With Fire and Sword’s intriguing setting helps prevent that from being the case. ![]() What you do after that is up to you, and this is where With Fire and Sword really shines. You join a thug fight that’s a vague tutorial, get directions to the nearest town, and then just keep going. The game starts out as all good open-world RPGs should, throwing you in the middle of nowhere with very little direction. Each silver lining has a cloud though it seems that despite the fantastic amount of content in the game and incredibly non-linear gameplay, it looks horrible and has some rather embarrassing dialogue. ![]() Yet another PC action RPG based on an obscure Polish novel that I had never come across didn’t quite sound like my idea of a fun day at the office, but my cynical preconceptions were unfounded because with fire and the sword surprised me with its unique setting and intriguing fights. ![]()
